ONE • One Planet One Future’s photographs confront human-caused threats to the planet, including water scarcity, species extinction, and pollution through the ingenious use of vanitas art. De Carbuccia calls these installations “time shrines,” which refers to the way in which the installation, though ephemeral, becomes part of a permanent photographic record.

The installation ’s unique design enhances the various themes of de Carbuccia’s artworks. It consists of both indoor and outdoor components: the photographic artworks housed in the old Westbeth Sculpture Room and the block-long section of the original High Line that runs through the building itself . The outdoor Light Installation is visible every day from Washington Street, between Bethune St and Bank St, from 6:30pm to 10:00pm.

Westbeth ’s Sculpture Room was completely flooded during Hurricane Sandy. Today, the installation reimagines the effect of the flood both as a reminder of that event and a call to action to address human-caused climate change. Each photo cove is like a chapel consecrated to a different theme: extinction, war, water, and plastic. The theme of the main gallery is wonder and hope , and a short film narrated by de Carbuccia takes visitors behind the scenes on the photographic expeditions and illuminates the intention of the work.
